Important Tips for the Summer road trip

For many, school is just about out, which means Summer is near. And once Summer officially presents itself, nearly half of all Americans will take to the road and head towards their favorite destination - whether it be a beach, national resort or theme park. The average road trip is estimated to be around 284 miles (one-way), so with all that driving, its best to be prepared before leaving town.

Below are just a few tips on what to check for prior to the big trip:

1. Get a Check-Up
Seems like a no-brainer, but having your vehicle checked before heading out is a must. Whether it’s a new set of wipers, a fluid fill-up, a brake inspection or a new battery, having peace-of-min d while driving is worth its weight in gold.

2. Don’t get tired
Have you been driving on your tires for a long time? To feel safe, all tires should have a good amount of tread, and one way to see how much you have left is by inserting a quarter upside down (in the tread). If you can see George Washington’s head, then it’s time for a replacement. If all checks out, then it’s time to inspect the pressure! Yes, tires with either too much or too little pressure can not only affect their wear, but fuel efficiency too. Refer to your owners guide or the driver’s door jam for the recommended levels.

3. Prepare yourself
The last thing you want to do is be stuck in the middle of nowhere…unprepared. Make sure to pack your car with an emergency kit, such as a first-aid kit, flashlight, blanket, water and extra snacks.

4 . Kids will be kids
Traveling solo, or with other adults can be a fairly easy-going experience. Add kids to the mix, and you need to expect the unexpected. They will get bored, they will get tired and they will get hungry. Make sure to pack snacks, music and games to keep them occupied - and if electronics are their go-to for entertainment, then make sure to bring an extra charger and car adapter for when the battery inevitably goes out.

5. Traffic. Traffic. More Traffic.
There are technically 5 seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Construction. Expect to be stuck in traffic or at the very least, be traveling at a reduced speed. If you’re on a time schedule, account for the slow-go, as well as bathroom breaks and meals.

For a Summer road trip, the car ride alone can make more memories than anywhere else. Make sure they’re good ones by being ready for anything the roadway has to offer.
